Wat Phou UNESCO site and Bolaven Plateau travel guide
April 12, 2024
Most travellers to Laos will only visit Luang Prabang and Vientiane before moving to another country. Our journey led us to Pakse and the Bolaven Plateau in the south of Laos. One of the main attraction near Pakse if the fifth century UNESCO archeological site of Wat Phou in the Champassak province. When arriving at the site, spend some time visiting the museum located at the entrance. You will admire a display of Hindu statues and artefacts that were discovered in the area.
After your museum visit, catch a small electric bus. This will help you save some energy for the subsequent walk up the seven stair levels to the foot of the mountain. The short drive will take you along a walkway flanked by 108 linga stone pillars. You will reach two large water reservoirs and the remains of two rectangular Khmer halls. These structures once served as the quarters of the King and the Queen.
Following your visit climb up to the foot of the mountain for a fabulous view over the site. You will be greeted by an impressive 11th century temple ruin. You can wander around this level to see the Buddha footprint as well as boulders in the shape of an elephant and a crocodile. Based on Chinese scriptures, the latter was possibly used for annual human sacrifices.
Return to the first terrace and drive to your hotel of choice to spend some relaxing time. We stayed at an eco-resort called “The River Resort” on the banks of the Mekong river. It is a wonderful, luxurious and quiet place.
