Thailand – The Ratchaburi Province

The Ratchaburi Province

Explore Kanchanaburi, Erawan Waterfalls, and Maeklong Railway Market

March 11, 2024

Following the vibrant hustle of Bangkok, set course southwest to the Ratchaburi Province in direction of Kanchanaburi. En route, pause to explore the salt fields and the spectacle of the Maeklong Railway Market where vendors deftly move their wares as the train passes through.

Your next stop should be the Damnoen Saduak floating market in Ratchaburi. This is one of the most popular floating markets in Thailand. Hop on a long-tail boat to cruise along the waterways.

Once in Kanchanaburi, you will be drawn into the historical realms of the city, which is renowned for its iconic Bridge on the River Kwai. Built during World War II by prisoners of war under harrowing conditions, the bridge stands as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made during that tumultuous era.

Delve deeper into history with visits to the memorial and the JEATH War Museum. They commemorate the dead and give you an insight of the enormity of the task and the atrocious conditions in which the prisoners were forced to work.

Yet, Kanchanaburi extends beyond its historical landmarks. It is the gateway to natural wonders including the wonderful Erawan National Park, with its caves and waterfalls.

The multi-tiered waterfall is absolutely splendid and you can swim in its crystalline pools. On the other hand, the Phra That Cave, a large mountain cave filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, feels slightly claustrophobic. A local guide equipped with torches will accompany you to illuminate its subterranean wonders.
