Sullistani

November 21, 2020

On 3 August we decided to travel to Sullistani, a pre-Inca cemetery dating back to 1100 A.D. The tall stone towers were the burial chambers of the Colla nobility who lived in the area. The tallest tower being 12 meters high.

Mummies were discovered in the towers that held up to twelve members of each family. The towers were once beautifully decorated in gold and silver and also held objects the people would need for the afterlife.

It was a beautiful place with the burial towers built on hills overlooking the Lake Umayo. Walking through here was like walking back in time.
