Travelling to Sri Lanka is a journey of contrast that feels both rich and deeply varied. From the moment you arrive, the island reveals its layered character. You move quickly between cultures, landscapes and experiences.
We travelled across the island over five weeks. Throughout the trip, it remained a journey of contrast at every turn. We explored cities shaped by trade and colonial history. Then, we climbed ancient rock fortresses and walked through sacred temples. Soon after, we found ourselves surrounded by endless tea plantations. Finally, we slowed down along the coast, where the pace of life softened.
Moreover, Sri Lanka is easy to navigate. Distances are short, yet the diversity is striking. This constant shift reinforces the sense of a journey of contrast. Roads connect most regions well, although journeys can take longer than expected. Therefore, it suits travellers who want to see a lot without rushing too much. To make it even easier, we booked a driver/guide with Travel with Rana. Our driver's name was Upul. We had a wonderful time with him.
In the next few posts, I will share our route and honest impressions. I will also include practical tips and small details that made a difference. In addition, I will highlight moments that felt truly special. These small experiences often define a journey more than the main attractions.
Colombo: A City of Contrasts
Colombo often surprises first-time visitors. Many arrive expecting a large airport for such a sizeable island. However, the experience feels calm and manageable. This gentle arrival sets the tone for exploring Sri Lanka’s tea trails, history and beaches.
Before you travel to Sri Lanka, you can arrange a 30-day tourist visa online through the ETA system. Alternatively, you can obtain a visa on arrival. Both options work well, although advance planning saves time. After you exit the airport, you will find several transport choices. Official taxis wait outside, yet pre-booked transfers offer ease of travel. In addition, apps such as PickMe or Kangaroo provide reliable and fairly priced rides into the city.
Colombo: A Guided Walk
To understand Colombo, start with a guided walk. You can book a tour with Colombo City Walks. Their 2.5-hour tours deliver clear insights and local stories. We began in the Fort area, near the Dutch Hospital. From there, we moved through streets filled with history and daily life. The walk then led us towards the lively Pettah Market.
Along the way, do not miss the Colombo Fort Old Lighthouse and Clock Tower. It stands as one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Interestingly, it serves as both a lighthouse and a clock tower. The clock and lantern were made in Britain and stored for years before installation. As a result, the tower carries a unique story.
Just before reaching it, stop at the Central Point Economic History Museum. Inside, a striking staircase and hanging light create a perfect photo moment. Meanwhile, many nearby buildings show signs of past neglect. However, restoration work is now underway. The Dutch Hospital stands as a strong example of successful renovation. Today, it houses cafés, shops and restaurants.
Next, take a short break at the Grand Oriental Hotel. Although parts of the building remain under refurbishment, visitors can access the upper floor bar. From there, you can enjoy wide views over the harbour. The setting feels both historic and relaxed. After a refreshing drink, continue your journey towards Pettah.
Pettah Market offers a lively and colourful experience. For the best atmosphere, visit in the morning. Traders set up their stalls, and the streets fill with energy. You will find almost everything here, from fabrics to electronics. In fact, locals often say that if you cannot find an item in Pettah, it does not exist on the island.
Stay alert
A word of advice, stay alert while exploring Colombo. Some well-dressed individuals may approach you claiming to work at your hotel. They will try to trick you into tuk tuk tours. They may claim that tuk tuks of a certain colour are the only ones providing official services. All tuk tuks are privately owned, and few use meters. Therefore, use the PickMe app or agree on a price in advance with a tuk tuk owner.
Museum, park, beach, shopping mall and temples
If time allows, visit the National Museum. It is one of Colombo’s most rewarding stops. The building, which dates from 1876, was built in the Italian Architectural style. Moreover, it feels calm and grand as you step inside. Inside, you will find a wide collection that tells Sri Lanka’s story. The exhibits focus on the island’s cultural heritage. Therefore, it is a great place to understand the country’s past.
Afterwards, cross the road and explore Viharamahadevi Park. It sits just opposite the museum, so it is easy to reach. The park offers shade, open space, and a relaxed feel. In addition, you can visit the small aquarium. You may also spot a few elephants kept within the grounds. Overall, this area blends history and leisure with ease.
Start with a walk along Galle Face Beach and enjoy the sea breeze. Then, step into One Galle Face mall for a quick look around. Afterwards, continue to the Galle Face Hotel, which faces the Indian Ocean. This grand hotel dates from 1864 and offers a glimpse into Colombo’s colonial past.
Finally, take time to explore Colombo’s religious sites. The city reflects a rich mix of cultures and beliefs. Visit the Gangaramaya Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Colombo. Then head to Seema Malaka, which sits peacefully on a small lake. If time allows, continue to the Arulmigu Sivasubramaniya Swamy Temple. Each site offers a different view into the city’s spiritual life.
