Siem Reap travel guide and Angkor Wat tips
May 6, 2024
If you have enough time, visit the National Museum in Siem Reap before heading to the temples. This visit will give you a good idea of what to expect at Angkor Wat. Although photography with professional cameras is not allowed inside, the museum is worth it.
Buy your ticket to Angkor Wat’s UNESCO site in advance. This will save you time on the day of your visit and let you avoid getting up even earlier for the sunrise. Bring a take-away breakfast to beat the heat and the crowds after seeing the main temple.
Do not miss Ta Prohm, also known as the Tomb Raider temple, covered by overgrown trees. Head to the Bayon Temple with its 54 towers of smiling Buddhas. If you have enough energy and don’t mind big crowds, climb Phnom Bakheng Hill to see the sunset over the jungle and Angkor Wat. The temple on Bakheng Hill has 108 towers.
If you have more days to explore the city’s surroundings, take a tour van to Phnom Kulen waterfall and the River of 1000 Lingas. The tour will lead you through the mountains, about two hours from the center. You will stop at a viewpoint and visit a pagoda with a reclining Buddha. There, you can try local baked goods and receive a Cambodian blessing.
In the center of Siem Reap, visit Wat Preah Prom Rath, Wat Bo, and Theam’s Gallery. Theam’s Gallery is a museum with beautiful art displays and a large collection of religious statues.
