Ninh Binh: Boats, Temples, and Stunning Views! Ninh Binh is like an inland Halong Bay. Enjoy a boat trip on the Tam Coc River. Board a sampan on the Ngo Dong River, where a villager will guide you through breathtaking mountain views. You’ll pass through caves barely high enough for the boat and its passengers. Along the way, see goats climbing hills, large birds in rice fields, and farmers working.
Near Ninh Binh, visit the Phat Diem Cathedral. Built between 1875-1899, Phat Diem is known as Vietnam’s “Catholic capital.” The cathedral blends traditional pagoda architecture with Western church design. Made of stone and wood, the cathedral’s interior is stunning.
Spend more time in Ninh Binh by visiting Hoa Lu, the Ancient Capital of Vietnam from the 11th century. Explore the remaining two temples of the Dinh and Le Emperors. These temples, restored in the 17th century, are believed to be built on the original foundations of the old palaces.
Next, visit Mua Cave Mountain for a short hike. The climb leads to an incredible viewpoint of the Ngo Dong River winding around the mountains. The ascent is steep, so wear proper shoes and bring water. The view is worth the effort. Depending on the season, blooming water lilies will enhance the area’s enchanting atmosphere.
