From Puno to Cusco
February 20, 2021
We left Puno in style! We decided to travel by luxury train – a little like a Peru version of the Orient Express. After checking in our luggage we were shown to our carriage by extremely friendly and attentive staff. It was like stepping back in time. The carriages were beautifully furnished with comfortable armchairs and gleaming brass lamps on every table.
As well as having a delicious “à la carte” lunch, accompanied by Chilean wine, we relaxed and enjoyed the scenery and watched Peruvian life rolling by outside. The train journey did take longer than other ways of travelling to Cusco, but it was well worth those extra hours being entertained by a brilliant Peruvian band, dancers and even a fashion show!

Coming out of Puno, we crossed through a market where stalls were not only dangerously close to the train, there was produce lying ON the tracks. Some stalls were quickly moved out of the way to let the train pass, others just ignored the train completely and carried on selling their wears. Some of the dramatic sceneries could only have been seen by train journey and completely missed if we had chosen to travel by bus. We hope the photos in the gallery will give you some idea of this unique experience. Anyone planning a trip to Peru should not miss it.
