If you want to experience Hanoi during the Tet (Vietnamese New Year), check the dates online. It usually falls in late January or early February. Expect big fireworks and plenty of celebrations. The city will be very busy with everyone gathering to meet with their families. In addition, many restaurants, bars, and shops will be closed for a few days. This will slightly restrict your choice. Furthermore, laundry services may also be unavailable. So plan in advance if you need anything washed.
If you are in Hanoi during Tet, avoid the Literature Museum. It will be packed with Vietnamese families visiting the temple. You will see many students having their portrait taken in university gowns.
Nevertheless, take a walk from the museum to the lakeside. Pass attractions like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Presidential Palace. Since these places will be closed, there will not be many tourists around, allowing you to take perfect pictures.
