Visiting the Machu Picchu
August 15, 2019
Our guide picked us up at our hotel at 5:10am and we joined an already long queue of people wanting to be first at the Machu Picchu opening at 6:00am. Do not be fooled… this is the best time to visit the Machu Picchu!
It was still dark as we arrived and walked through the main gate. It was difficult to see anything through the darkness and morning mist. We were guided to the first view point just as the sun was rising and the clouds were parting and it was quite a dramatic moment to get our first glimpses of this astonishing time capsule.

Although many tourists had gathered, the silence and the vast space of what we were viewing made us feel that we were completely alone. We were astounded and completely overwhelmed by the beauty of Machu Picchu. It is everything that has been described in books and spoken of by people over many years since its discovery in 1911.
The preservation of the city is magnificent and we really felt as if we had walked in the foot steps of the Inca people who had lived there. We were told that the inhabitants had quickly abandoned the city to avoid the invasion of the Spaniards. The city still looks as if they will return at any moment and take up residency again. What a place to have lived your life!
Surrounded by majestic mountains that look like hooded giants watching your every move and as close to the heavens as you can possibly get. Quite simply, it is stunning and deserves its recognition as one of the seven wonders of the world. It has definitely been the highlight of our Peruvian adventure and we hope that the pictures will do it justice, but I do not think anything can other than actually being there.
