Online
In theory, the system feels simple. Around three days after arriving in the country, you can apply online through the official immigration website. You will need a picture of your passport, as passport photo and a proof of your return flight. Latest two days after submitting your request, you should receive a payment link. However, this step does not always work as expected. In our case, my wife received her link without any issue. Check your spam folder, the email with the payment link may well be there. Meanwhile, I received nothing at all. As soon as I realised I had not received my payment link email, I tried calling immigration offices daily. In addition, I sent several emails to various addresses provided on the immigration website. Unfortunately, I received no response. As a result, we had to travel to Colombo to complete the process in person.
Get your registration number
Once you arrive at the immigration office in Battaramulla head for Wing C on the fourth floor. If you did not download the visa extension form from their website, get one there. You must complete the extension form and attach a passport photo. If you do not have a photograph, do not worry. Small photo studios are available all-around Sri Lanka. They offer quick and affordable services.
When you get to the immigration building, stay cautious. Some individuals may approach you and offer help. You do not need their services. Instead, go directly to Wing C on the fourth floor. Present your passport and completed form with attached passport photo. The photograph must be glued to the form. At this stage, you will receive a registration number.
Hand-over your documents
Next, head to Wing B on the same floor. There, you must wait for your number to appear on a screen. My registration number never appeared on the screen. I had to ask a staff member to let me into one of the immigration officers’ cubicles to hand over my application form and passport. Once called, hand over your documents to the officer.
Pay the fees
Then, return to Wing C and wait in the payment processing area. This stage often requires patience. In fact, you may wait several hours. Therefore, arrive early in the morning if possible. Registration closes at 2pm, so timing matters.
Expect your Sri Lankan visa extension to include moments of uncertainty. Again, my registration number never appeared on the screen. However, I suddenly received a payment link email. Fortunately, I had internet access and could act quickly. When your number appears, you can head to the cashier to pay the fee, which is around 100 US dollars.
Wait to collect your passport
After payment, move to the visa issuing counter, which is to the side of the payment cashier desks. Again, expect to wait. In our case, the final step took around 90 minutes bringing the total wait to four and a half hours. Eventually, your name will be called. You can then collect your passport and sign the register before leaving.
Overall, the process feels slow and often disorganised. Having worked in process improvement, I found it surprisingly inefficient. Nevertheless, patience remains essential.
Therefore, plan carefully. If possible, limit your stay to 30 days. Alternatively, ensure you are near Colombo when your extension becomes due. This approach will save time and reduce stress.
